Wellness visits are the most important part of your pet’s medical care at any age. Many, many serious problems can be detected early or entirely prevented with the proper screenings, vaccinations, and parasite preventatives.

Puppies and kittens should be seen starting at the age of six weeks to begin vaccinations and screening for parasites. Intestinal worms, coccidiosis, fleas, ticks, ear mites, and ringworm are common in young animals and easily treated when caught before they cause serious diseases. Puppies and kittens are seen monthly until 4-5 months of age to administer vaccines and monitor growth and weight. We will help you choose the best products for control of both internal and external parasites including fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and heartworms. These initial series of vaccines are vitally important in preventing serious and potentially fatal diseases such as parvovirus in puppies and leukemia virus in kittens. In addition to the appropriate puppy or kitten vaccinations, a rabies vaccine is given after 12 weeks of age. Once the initial series of vaccines is completed, your puppy or kitten will not need vaccinations again until the first adult vaccines given after one year of age.

Adult dogs and cats are seen yearly for parasite screening and vaccinations. Every patient has different needs, and we will work with you and your pets to ensure they receive the vaccinations appropriate for them throughout their lives. Perhaps the most important aspect of wellness care for pets in our area is helping owners decide on the best products and treatments to prevent parasites including intestinal worms, fleas, ticks, and – most importantly – heartworms. Unfortunately, heartworm and tick-borne diseases are extremely common in Mississippi and are often fatal. The good news is that they are also entirely preventable.
